You girls, thank you for living The Mentalist with me. I had no idea how much I loved pouring my hearts into this.. Y'all make me jog down memory lane and I've never lived in The Mentalist world so much before the show's over. I kind of gotten carried away writing this post thus why it is quite long. Last post questions were 99% Lisbon and Robin Tunney, this time was about 80% Patrick Jane.

I hope I won't bore you. Here you go:

My Blue Heaven. 

It was a perfect Pilot for a reboot. Simon Baker's eyes made this episode picturesque, beautiful and fresh. The lighting, tone and colour of the show changed 180 degrees and out of sudden it felt like we were being fed with a breath of fresh air after being suffocated by painful angsty poison of the past 8 episodes...I could literally feel all the torment in my heart being lifted. Also very rare you can watch a romance movie with this amount of subtlety and depth that tells a lot about the characters. It was a beautiful movie about love and longing with the most touching and heartfelt moments.

And as usual, his episode always makes me forgot that The Mentalist is from a network show.

I refuse to believe that he has powers because The Mentalist isn't a sci-fi show. So to me it is the same as Jane: Process of elimination. Don't forget he's also a Mentalist, the devil version of Patrick Jane.

Another speculation I couldn't exclude is: if he had such a strong hypnotism power, he could've hypnotised Jane into giving him his list (with whatever methods / people he used) and then plant a suggestion for him to forget. I know someone in my hometown who had been a crime victim of hypnotism and completely had no idea , hence I couldn't exclude this possibility.

What I love most about Patrick Jane is he has flaws, so MANY human FLAWS that he's almost too real to be a fictional character. He's ashamed of his weaknesses. He has a huge egostistical crap. He has a pride as huge as a mountain. He's self loathing. He's weak, and his deeply private, mysterious heart gave him all kinds of emotional struggles and tangled-threads conflicting self. He's the definition of a perfectly made damaged goods but on top of it all he kept them all unseen. If you know about human psychology, human beings' gesture & behaviour are sometimes based on what we don't want others to see inside us. Our facade is the opposite of us -sometimes. In Mentalist 1.0, Jane's craziness and mischievousness were at times too over the top, like he tends to over act because he wanted to show people that he's this very happy, cheery person with nothing to worry about. It's kind of a misdirection. He tuned the volume so high up that he sometimes(or most times) was a pain in the ass. He's trying hard to conceal his true self hence the opposite facade. It's human nature. However in Mentalist 2.0, he is more calm in his behaviour, more at peace. Still looked disoriented at times but calm. That was because his inner self had begun to find peace. Hence his facade and true self started to merge. Have a think about this and ask yourself if some attributes you show people in real life were actually not the true you.(in real life though, not in fandom life because I think fandom life is a way of letting loose sometimes, or the opposite). Anyway, I've no idea why I dwell into psychology (got carried away) but I love Patrick Jane the way he reflects the most complex part of human nature. And I love that no matter how weak, hopeless and broken he was he's still strong and brave enough to stand up and give himself a second chance. Lisbon helped to fix him, but a new man would've never been born if he hadn't want to be fixed.

My favorite con of him is the one in Devils Cherry. What better way than solving crime by tricking the murderer into thinking she's in the trance of hallucinations and be the hallucination yourself. I think this was the FUNNIEST, most CREATIVE crime solving I've ever watched in my life. Acting as elements of hallucination while speaking weird-funny-Alien language was so entertaining to watch!! It is also a point of pride because ONLY our show could do this. Not Sherlock Holmes, not Columbo or some crime solving detective with IQ of an Einstein. Believe it or not I may have asked Daniel Cerone to marry me. 

Another very favourite con of him is his circus trick in using Pigeon as Weapon of Mass Destruction (ok I may have exaggerated a little bit for effect). Again, I love how this simplicity of a trick in targeting human weakness' could do so much. Furthermore, that trick was SO in character for the show and the character and NO GODAMN SHOWS COULD EVER DO THIS. 

They make me very proud of the show!

I love the amount of length he went to help Hightower escape. He had so much faith in her that she was telling the truth, went to crash himself in a vehicle. Also the Red Sails In The Sunset parallelism. \\ 0__0 //

I also love his hypnotism trick in Red Alert. Pretending to calm a victim when the actual target is to hypnotise the kidnapper was so creative. Spot on.

Actually, to me it's more of a reflection of the good person in him. He's obsessed with mountain desire but deep down he's still a good man who values innocents' life (keyword: Innocent). And I think he would do the same if it were Cho or Rigby or VanPelt. And the fact that it was Lisbon, the woman who gave him a home and his closest friend, its right off the top of his head. Just a natural reflex, overweighing the jitters of dealing with a thing he's most uncomfortable with - Gun.

Her heart. Her pure good heart and infinite well of forgiveness.

She saved him, gave him a home when he's homeless. She looked after him. Watched his back for him. Supported him. Trusted him. Defended him. Took blame for him. Protected him. Didn't care to lose her job for him. Went for Anger Management for him. Took a bullet for him. Lost him. Waited for him. Worried sick about him. Be there again for him. Went nuts for him. Went through dark places with him. Lost him again. Missed him. Be there again for him. Be a doormat for him. Lost him again. Lost her career for him. Be there again for him and always.

She's always the light at the end of his tunnel, his better half.

If that is not a person with the biggest heart I don't know what is.

About his parents, again just purely speculation: I have no idea about his mum but with his dad, I figured he was blown by disappointment when Jane ran away from the Carnie life. He probably disowned him and took off. According to Red John's Rules, the Janes had been running Carnies for 100 years, probably. So it was a long history of family business and to have your son not willing to continue the family line could be a huge blow.

Another thing I couldn't help but think is he wasn't impressed with his father's con and sick morality into tricking innocent people hence why he ran off. But at the end of the day he not only became a person his father was but worse, and as a result he got his own newly-built family killed. That would contribute into the severeness of his mental trauma. Also the fact that he hallucinated about his daughter instead of his wife could have a deeper meaning. Because he was a failed father (100x times worse than his father). A disgrace to himself and the fatherly world.

Minelli, because he was a father figure for Lisbon. Lisbon never had a good father growing up and a person in her shoes would have longed for the love of a father, someone she could look up to and felt safe with. He was her role model and they had mutual trust. She respected him, even joked with him. 
When did Lisbon ever joke comfortably with a colleague? That was because she treated him like a family member.

Also Minelli's speech in His Red Right Hand was one of the best speech I've ever seen. It was incredibly moving and true. He delivered it seamlessly. I'll never forget. Let me....

We go into dark, horrible places alone and afraid and we do it with no money, with broken down vehicles, with computers that have more viruses than a ten dollar whore. How? Good people. And I lost three good people today and a fourth is in critical condition. And you ask me how I’m feeling? I’m feeling sad, you moron.

There were a few but my favorite I must say is the Leather jacket with the (sexy and tight) Jeans. The leather brings out the strong woman, badass attitude of her. The-iconic-Lisbon-style. It's almost like her armour suit.

And when she held her gun in that outfit...jesus!

And when she held her gun with her LEFT HAND in that outfit...jesus!

And when she had her ponytail in that outfit...jesus!

Even Robin Tunney missed her so badly thus why she decided to wear it for groceries shopping.

Totally! Yes. I think it was part of her character development. If I don't recall wrongly, Robin was also still in her long hair in 2007. I think she was being asked to do a bob to portray the nerdy-by-the-book cop. Her wardrobe suck big time at the beginning because she had no life. It was when Jane came in she started to enjoy life a little, have fun, and live a little. She started with the bob, very light make up, tied her hair unfashionably in the beginning of Season 1. Then slowly waved her bob, put on a slightly thicker make up (and shiny lipstick). She glows when Jane is around. In season 2 she cut bangs, wears thicker make up (my FAV make up by the way), thick eyeliner that did wonder to her BIG green eyes, and started to wear high heel boots. Better wardrobe too. She really took care of her look, because she started to live life with Jane around, looking forward to go to work because it's fun. Then again in late season 4 she's back to almost no make up (look at when Jane left for Vegas). So I think all these were reflection to what the character's feeling at that particular point in life thus the change in wardrobe too!

10. Amazing Grace Tequila.

When the music stopped, the silence as they just stood still with just their singing voices...gadd it felt like a funeral. The team was full in shape but it felt so lonely. Jane the weakest one had to leave early because he couldn't bask himself in the emotions of a life lost. 

9. Jane and Charlotte.

The moment when he got strapped in the hospital bed and talking to his daughter was very heartbreaking for me. It showed how much he misses her and this is how he imagined her growing up. The great love of a father. 

The music..jesus! Their dialogue...jesus! Also Charlotte's lines just shows how conflicted he was inside him, god its heartbreaking.

The "waaaait...."

And the self-destructing Belladonna session. Jane, please.

8. Sunset.

I dare to bet that none of us would see Sunset the way it was anymore. This scene was just mean and cruel and heartless and cold-blooded and inhumane and merciless and it belonged to the world of the devil.

7. Tea cup shattered.

I literally screamed in shock when they broke the piece. My heart shattered in a million pieces together with the cup. I hadn't know a thing could possess such a huge sentimental value until this happens. It hurts. This was when I officially gave Simon Baker the award for the Most Sadistic human being of the century BECAUSE THIS WAS HIS IDEA. 

The resurrection of the teacup was equally moving and heartbreaking because all I could imagined was picturing Lisbon picking up the pieces.. piece by piece and glued them together because it was all she had left of him. 

6. Empty CBI 

When her home and family that she had built for more than 10 years was ripped apart, leaving it a cold empty room. Too painful, excuse me. 

Also this set have had so much sentimental value to the audience. Still remember those days when we all grieve together.

5. It's over, its done. I just want you to know I'm okay. And I'm gonna miss you.

The moment when he thought he wasn't going to see her anymore. She wasn't even given the chance to hear his voice or to give a proper goodbye one last time. All she'd left was being punished into a demoted town, handling bicycles and staples. PAIN. 

Which is why I said we were being suffocated in a painful toxic in Season 6 until My Blue Heaven came into play.

4. Letters to Lisbon.

When Matt Gossen's music played in the background while Jane's Dear Lisbon started to play.....I got to admit, I cried. It was so touching and sad at the same time. He misses her so much and I can't help to think that this is his days like for the past 2 years - in a beautiful heaven, place surroundings with dolphins and white sandy beaches and clean fresh air while still indulging in loneliness and emptiness. Writing letters for her everyday (and checking stamp fee) was what kept his sanity intact.

She on the other hand, spent every night reading the box full of letters, perhaps accompanied with the glued teacup. Perhaps making some tea to actualize his presence.

Gadd it was beautiful. And heart wrenching. And sad.

3. Lisbon and Cho hug. 

The moment when he took her to a trip down memory lane. My eyes were a little wet when I watched this scene (that time was during the sneak peek). It's too much. How these two had come together and just say words of gratitude from the heart before she left. Just being completely honest and open with each other. All masks were lifted. Naked soul all over. And they hugged for the first time in their life. Well its heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

You remember the first day we worked together? I almost quit. But then I saw the way you worked. I knew I had to stay. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you. Whatever decision you make, it's been an honor.

Did I mention in my previous post that they were(still are) my favourite BROTP.

2. Vega demise
The moment when her last words before death were "did I mess up?"...still trying to seek approval from her boss. No. Abort. No.

The moment when her face showed on the computer screen. No. Abort.

The stoic, heartbreaking funeral. NO.

The moment when her photo was shown with the flag. Abort. No.

The moment when everyone took turn to bury soil to her grave. NO ABORT NO.

ABORT. ABORT. ABORT


AND...TV'S MOST HEARTBREAKING MOMENT GOES TO...*DRUMROLLS*

1. Lisbon's Cannoli tears.

To normal people this scene would've been very normal but not for Mentalistas. It was my most heartbreaking scene in the entire series for me. Maybe just me. It screwed with my emotions.

She was literally dying to hear something from him. When she said Jane, you didn't come here this late to drop off cannoli she was literally screaming, begging him to open up. Say something. She was in so much pain that she finally for the first time ever in her life she let a tear stroke down her cheek for Patrick Jane. Man that was HUGE at the time.

This scene turned me into a sadist and I remember repeating it 100 times a day, in slow-mo and fast-mo in a loop, followed by Christina Aguilera's Say Something.

Vanesso, why did you ask me to relive through all this pain? Lol, but I loved it, I gladly live in a sadism world when The Mentalist is concern.

Did I ship Cho & Summer? Yes and no. I'm neutral. 

They're cute I admit, and I agree the guy needed to get laid at some point. So I wasn't against the idea of a short term infatuation. However I wouldn't like it if the writers bring her back to give them a second chance, or put them back together for the sake of happy ever after. To me their story is over, it's done, it's finished. And to me Cho's character doesn't need love to be happy. (I was so scared they're gonna put him with Vega, thank god it never happened). He belonged to be the leader, sky rocket in his career, and to take Barrack Obama's place in the upcoming election. He would rule the United States of America to be the most stoic country in the world. Hence his ending makes me very happy. It was very fitting to his character.

Someplace fabulous to go. Well I think he would take her out that night, but not for a romantic intention. He was too used to having her around like BFFs (eventhough he knew that he loved her) that I find it was impossible for him to make a change without the Pancake catalyst. Too stubborn as a person to get out of his comfort zone and make changes. He's happy when she's around and that was enough for him. The night when he brought the cannoli though, I reckon if he hadn't seen Marcus-no-pressure-face there he would've said something to her.

In my opinion, the same as Lisbon I don't think there was an exact time when he actually realised that he had felt for her romantically (at least not in Mentalist 1.0). He knew he always loved her and that she's important to him but when did he start feeling for her that way, I don't think he realised it or even putting in an effort to analyse. And the fact that he's so deeply private and mysterious in his heart I don't think he could really understand himself either. He had so many layers in his emotional struggles that he wouldn't even have a clue what was his own feelings exactly. For so many years he'd gotten lost in his own deep thoughts hence the romance were all buried in his subconscious - Devils Cherry proved this point to me. Strawberries and Cream though, made him realised how important she is to him and how much she'd meant to him. It's normal when you developed a strong bond with someone, and doesn't need to be romantic because there are so many forms of love. (And to me the fact that he didn't pursue his feelings in Mentalist 1.0 is also a form of love. He had so much baggage and issues to deal with that it would not be fair for Lisbon. He wasn't a stable human. Wasn't fit to give her happiness. Setting your loved one go to pursue other happiness is the greatest love of all.) 

Spending two years in South America though must've got him to ponder why he missed her so much and longed for her so much. But the same as Lisbon I don't think he's ready to be honest to himself. His trauma, fear of lost could be blocking all rational thoughts about any romantic feelings. And then when he heard Lisbon's going for a date with Ardiles, his jealous reaction was so spontaneous that I don't think if Jane realised what he was feeling he would actually just let that out. It's more like a natural reflex from his subconscious that he didn't even realised it himself. But maybe afterwards that got him into thinking why he felt something....while still continues living in a world of lie. Like Abbott said, he fell for his own con which is so true and telling.

So no, without Marcus high pressure's pancake I couldn't have ever seen him really making a move. To him he just needed her to be around him and that makes him happy and more than enough to live  that new chapter of his. Marcus had forced him to face reality and to choose between taking a risk or declare for defeat - lost her forever for real. He was so stressed that he couldn't even put on a front anymore.

I would change the entire episode of War of the Roses by fixing Jane back into character, without omitting Erika Flynn out of the episode.

And I would add a Jane and Lisbon hug scene in Graybar Hotel right after their near death encounter. That would make perfect sense.

My fav Jane quote is something non-shippy.

Truth hurts, I know. Its biologically based actually. Our brain process sound faster than they do light, but light moves faster than sound, see? So our brains are constantly shifting reality so the world syncs up. This, only when someone is standing 30 yards away do we see and hear the world exactly as it is. That's when your brain, sound, and light are all in perfect harmony. The rest of the time, we're living in the world of lies. Lies are what make the world make sense. Ergo, the truth hurts.

I literally SCREAMED my lungs out when he said this. It was the sickest, amazing scientific explanation about truth and lies, EVER. Bravo, Jane. And Jordan Harper deserved a kiss.

I teared a little on Rigsby and Van Pelt's wedding. I cried like a woman during childbirth on Jane and Lisbon's wedding. 

Nah, I'm kidding. 

I didn't cry on both. Of course Jane and Lisbon's wedding topped every fictional characters' wedding. No tears, just big smile, happiness, satisfaction. Happy ever after. I did have tears of joy during the baby news.

Caskett NO. But I do enjoy their interaction.

I rarely have other ships. Maybe Will and Alicia from The Good Wife. They're my unrequited ship, cockblocked by death. Why, because they're also complex, multidimensional characters, dealing with emotional struggles (also putting on a facade) and they have amazing character development & dynamics. Two adults dealing with life in a very adult life situation. Its like the Legal drama version of The Mentalist, only in different life circumstances.

But Jane and Abbott has developed a very special bond that Jane had never had with the rest of the bosses. They have built a foundation of trust and friendship, and in Copper Bullet Lena said that Abbott trusted Jane with his life. They hit right in the feels.

She's the biggest point of pride for the Lisbon and I even want her babies carry both their names.

Patrick for a boy. Because I want to hear her call Patrick. I can never see her calling Jane Patrick. He's always be Jane to her.

Confusing. Very twisted. Oh well, Mentalist family so, twisted it is.
